BOOK LAYOUT & FORMATTING

Interior Design Readers Feel but Never Notice

The best book interiors are invisible: type that’s effortless to read for hours, margins that sit naturally in the hand, chapter openings that give the story air. The worst are painfully visible — cramped gutters, rivers of white space, orphaned lines — and readers register them as ‘amateur’ without knowing why. Hoggard Publishers’ layout and formatting service gives your book the interior craft of a traditional publishing house: professional typesetting for print, flawless formatting for digital, and press-ready files accepted first time by every platform.

Typesetting Is the Craft Readers Never See

Interior design carries centuries of accumulated judgement: which typefaces sustain long reading, how leading and measure interact with trim size, where a chapter should open on the page, how to banish widows, orphans and hyphenation stacks. None of it announces itself — and that’s the point. Good typesetting removes every friction between reader and story; poor typesetting adds a small tax to every page, and reviews eventually say so.

Print and digital are two different crafts, and we practise both properly. Print typesetting is fixed and precise: your exact trim size, mirrored margins with a correct gutter, running heads, front and back matter set to convention, and files that meet printer specifications to the millimetre. Digital formatting is fluid by design: reflowable files whose typography adapts gracefully to any device and reader preference, with working navigation throughout — engineered, not exported.

Every genre gets its appropriate treatment — a novel’s quiet elegance, non-fiction’s headings, tables and figures, a cookbook or children’s book’s bespoke page-by-page composition — and every project ends the same way: proofs you approve, files accepted first time, and the sources delivered to you for future editions.

Layout & Formatting — Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between formatting and typesetting?

In practice they overlap: typesetting traditionally refers to the fine typographic craft of print interiors, while formatting covers preparing files for platforms — especially digital. Our service includes both: print interiors typeset to traditional standards, and digital editions engineered for every device.

What trim sizes do you work with?

All standard trade sizes — 5×8, 5.25×8, 5.5×8.5, 6×9 and more — plus large-format and square trims for illustrated and children’s books. We’ll recommend the size conventions of your genre and the implications for page count and print cost.

Can you handle images, tables and footnotes?

Yes — complex non-fiction is regular work for us. Figures placed properly with captions, tables that remain readable, footnotes or endnotes set to convention, and digital editions where all of it still works on a phone screen.

How long does formatting take?

A typical novel is typeset, proofed and delivered in one to two weeks from final manuscript. Complex non-fiction and illustrated titles take longer because each page is composed individually; we confirm a timeline with your quote.

What files will I receive?

Press-ready print PDFs to your printer’s specification, validated eBook files for Kindle and wide platforms, and the source files — so corrections and future editions never mean starting over.

My book is already formatted but looks wrong — can you fix it?

Yes. Remediation is common: we diagnose what’s failing (margins, typography, spacing, digital reflow), and either repair the existing files or re-set the book properly — whichever genuinely costs you less.
